Church Architectural Element, Wood Carved In Bas-relief With Angel Head Motifs, Tyrol, 18th Century
Carved element from a church decoration, 18th century
Wood carved in high relief, openwork, and polychromed, with gilded sections. Rectangular in shape and elongated, this element features an angel’s head with a finely modeled face and slightly parted lips, framed by wavy hair and two long wings. The lower portion features a symmetrical design of volutes, intertwined ribbons, and deeply carved acanthus leaves.
It likely originated from a set of Baroque religious furnishings, perhaps from choir stalls, an organ case, or an altarpiece. The vigor of the relief and the movement of the plant motifs suggest it was created in the first half of the 18th century.
Signs of wear and gaps in the polychrome paint.
