An Italian Hexagonal Ciborium, Inlaid With Ivory And Gilt-bronze Mounts, 19th Century
Hexagonal ciborium supported by an architectural ebonized wood structure, raised on a moulded base with turned supports and a shaped lower platform. The upper body, of centralised architectural form and surmounted by a removable stepped pyramidal cover topped by a gilt-bronze lion finial, is richly embellished with an elaborate ivory inlaid decorative scheme arranged within geometric reserves and panels articulated by refined foliate motifs, scrolls and neo-Renaissance-style arabesques. The side panels alternate broad inlaid reserves with gilt-bronze sculptural elements depicting female figures, while the lower register is further enriched with chased bronze mounts in the form of mascarons.
