Hippolyte Heizler; A Pair Of Noir De Namur Marble Urns With Patinated Bronze Mounts, Circa 1865
A pair of urns, each featuring a tapered ovoid body in Noir de Namur marble (Belgian black marble) with a mirror-polished finish. The flared upper rim displays a refined patinated bronze egg-and-dart molding above a waisted neck. The central section is encircled by a dark-patinated bronze ring frieze, finely chased in high relief to the front and back with a walking panther. Flanking the sides are two mirror-image handles composed of twin scrolls, which connect to the neck via swan heads and rest on the shoulder with acanthus leaf elements. The marble body terminates into a spreading, fluted patinated bronze foot, supported by a stepped square black marble base. The whole rests securely on a sumptuous plinth with four entirely gilded bronze paw feet. Each patinated bronze banding signed twice HEIZLER.
