A Lombard Ebony Wood Cabinet Inlaid With Ivory, Marble And Bronze Mounts, Italy, 17th Century
Of architectural form, raised on a moulded plinth, the ebony cabinet is enriched with fine ivory line inlay. The front is enclosed by a pair of doors which, when opened, reveal an elaborate monumental interior conceived as the façade of a classical building. The central section is dominated by a broken pediment decorated with ivory inlays of foliate scrolls and vegetal motifs, flanked by marble columns with gilt bronze capitals and bases. At the centre is an architectural compartment with three niches containing bronze figures, flanked by numerous small drawers with fronts inlaid with intricate ivory scrolling foliage and finely chased gilt-bronze mounts. The lower section is further enriched by a continuous frieze of scrolling foliate ivory inlay, punctuated by gilt bronze mounts. The interior of the doors is decorated with an elegant geometric ivory inlay scheme, while the upper fall front conceals a mirror framed by ivory stringing and geometric motifs echoing the ornamental vocabulary of the cabinet as a whole.
