A Cathedral-shaped Architectural Model Cabinet. By Zeno Balducci Di Bettona. Perugia, 1939

Artist: Zeno Balducci
Description

Freestanding center cabinet in the form of a Neo-Gothic architectural facade, crafted entirely from finely carved and inlaid walnut and fruitwood. The piece consists of two distinct sections, conceived as a single and cohesive furniture design signed by the master cabinetmaker Zeno Balducci di Bettona and dated Perugia, 1939. The upper section faithfully reproduces the volumes of a late Gothic cathedral. The facade, flanks, and all sides are articulated by a dense succession of pointed arches supported by freestanding cylindrical columns. The entire background wall surface is minutely carved to replicate the texture of brickwork. The front features three tall lancet bays that open through cleverly concealed opening systems in the upper compartment: the two side doors, embellished with five-pointed star inlays in the lunettes, conceal two symmetrical three drawer chests inside, fitted with burnished bronze ring pulls. The central door reveals an open compartment. The topmost cornice, decorated with a fringe of hanging trilobed arches, serves as a lid: the drop-front opening reveals a secret upper compartment equipped with a large coeval recessed mirror.
