Description

Rice Anne (1941-2021). Interview with the Vampire. A novel by Anne Rice. Alfred A. Knopf. New York, 1976. Signed by the author

First Edition
Signed by the author in the month of publication, May 1976

Signed and inscribed by the author: “For David, / with love, / Anne / May, 1976”, on the front free endpaper. Anne Rice’s first book and debut novel, Interview with the Vampire inaugurated the celebrated Vampire Chronicles and stands as one of the most significant works of Gothic and horror fiction of the second half of the twentieth century. Published by Alfred A. Knopf in New York in 1976, the novel introduces the vampire Louis, who recounts his life and transformation into a vampire alongside the figure of Lestat. The first edition comprises 371/372 pages and is distinguished by its original black cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spine, red top edge, and the celebrated gold dust jacket designed by R. D. Scudellari.

The book Interview with the Vampire was officially published in the United States on May 5, 1976. That same evening, the historic first book-signing party took place at the Minerva's Owl bookstore in San Francisco. An inscription dated "May, 1976" confirms that this copy was signed by Anne Rice during the very first month of promoting her debut novel. At that time, Anne Rice was still a completely unknown writer; she was not yet the global celebrity she would become in the 1990s. She signed very few books, and almost all of them were for acquaintances, friends, or attendees of those earliest presentations in San Francisco.
