Medieval Proto-stoneware Pitcher From Siegburg—13th/14th Century, Discovered In Cologne

Medieval proto-stoneware pitcher from Siegburg – 13th/14th century, discovered in Cologne

A rare medieval proto-stoneware pitcher from Siegburg, of Germanic origin, dating to the late 13th or early 14th century.

This wheel-thrown pitcher features a decoration of horizontal striations, a side handle, and a slightly tapered neck. The thumb-pressed base, as well as the clay body and wheel-throwing characteristics, are typical of proto-stoneware production in the Siegburg region during this period.

The piece has a particularly interesting provenance: it comes from the former estate of an architect and was discovered in the 1950s in Cologne during a construction project located between 8 Caecilienstrasse and 28 Blaubach Street, in the heart of the city’s historic center.

This discovery in an ancient urban context further enhances the historical significance of this rare medieval vessel, a testament to Germanic ceramic production at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries.

Dimensions: height 23 cm.

In good overall condition for an archaeological artifact of this age. Note: a chip on the rim and a crack on the body. No restoration.

A particularly interesting piece for enthusiasts of medieval ceramics, archaeology, and ancient Rhenish crafts.

Police Registry Ref.: A199
