Polychrome Wooden Egyptian Sarcophagus Mask – Late Period (664–332 B.c.) Archaeology

Polychrome wooden Egyptian sarcophagus mask – Late Period (664–332 B.C.) archaeology

Rare Egyptian funerary mask made of wood dating from the Late Period (664–332 B.C.).

This remarkable sarcophagus element depicts a male face wearing a traditional headdress and a false beard, a characteristic attribute associated with the deified deceased in the funerary beliefs of ancient Egypt.

The mask still retains significant traces of its original polychromy. The face is painted red, a color traditionally used to represent men in Egyptian art, while the eyes and eyebrows are outlined in black. These traces of ancient paint attest to the quality of the workmanship and the authenticity of the piece.

The sculpture displays fine modeling, particularly evident in the raised nose and stylized ears, which give the face a remarkable presence and expressiveness.

Dimensions: 18 x 29.5 cm.

This work comes from a former Belgian collection and was acquired from a gallery in Jerusalem in the 1960s.

A rare object steeped in history, this mask is a remarkable testament to the funerary art of ancient Egypt. It will appeal to enthusiasts of archaeology and Egyptology, as well as collectors of fine antiques.
