Madonna And Child - Devotional Wall Lamp, Utrecht Model - Late 15th / Early 16th Century
Charming bronze wall lamp depicting a Virgin and Child, datable to the late 15th or early 16th century, inspired by the famous model of the Virgin of Utrecht, in the Netherlands.
This work follows in the tradition of devotional objects produced in Utrecht, an important center of pilgrimage in the late Middle Ages. The original statue, produced in the first half of the 15th century and formerly housed in the city's cathedral, enjoyed great renown. It gave rise to an abundant production of statuettes, figurines and sconces for pilgrims.
.Our example faithfully reproduces the typical characteristics of this model: elegant posture of the Virgin, rhythmic treatment of the drapery, high crown and architectural base. These elements clearly link this piece to the spread of the cult of the Virgin of Utrecht.
