A Turned Rosewood Reliquary Containing The Relics Of Saint Victorin And Saint Valentine

Turned rosewood reliquary containing the relics of St. Victorin and St. Valentine

An elegant and rare small devotional reliquary made of turned rosewood, circular in shape, preserved in remarkable original condition.

The reliquary contains two bone relics, each identified by an authenticating inscription: “St. Victorin M.” and “St. Valentine M..” It closes with a turned wooden lid, the interior of which still bears its episcopal seal of authentication, the identity of which remains to be determined.

Saint Valentine, priest and martyr of Rome, is traditionally believed to have died around 269 and is celebrated on February 14. His veneration, which dates back to ancient times, developed particularly during the Middle Ages around the figure of the patron saint of engaged couples.

Saint Victorinus, a Christian martyr of antiquity, is traditionally celebrated on November 2.

The quality of the craftsmanship, the small size of the object, and above all its exceptional preservation in its original condition—complete with its episcopal seal—make it a charming object of private devotion, representative of 19th-century French production.

Very fine condition. No later additions.

Diameter: 3 cm.

Police Registry Ref.: A182
