Side-ring Socket Axe – Late Bronze Age, Ca. 1300–800 B.c.e. Protohistory
A rare bronze socketed axe featuring a lateral ring, characteristic of Late Bronze Age production (c. 1300–800 BCE).
Based on its typology, this specimen could be linked to a workshop in western France, possibly in Brittany or Normandy.
The piece features a beautiful green-of-gray archaeological patina, attesting to its age, as well as excellent condition. Its unsharpened edge suggests that it was not intended for functional use. Archaeologists frequently interpret this type of axe as having served a symbolic or votive function, or even as a form of proto-currency. This hypothesis is supported in particular by the discovery of axes in hoards or large collections, a characteristic of practices from the late Bronze Age.
Given its age, typology, and patina, this specimen is an interesting collector’s item, illustrating the metallurgical skills as well as the symbolic and economic practices of protohistoric societies.
