Rare solid silver spoon from the Byzantine period, dating from between the 6th and 9th centuries.

This remarkable piece stands out for its elegance and the delicacy of its decoration. It features a circular, slightly concave bowl, extended by a slender handle adorned with a series of small cross-shaped motifs and delicately engraved lines.

The upper part of the handle is adorned with a diagonally oriented square containing the depiction of a holy man with a halo, bearing a cross atop his head—a representation traditionally associated with Christ. The end is finished with a suspension ring, characteristic of this type of object.

These Byzantine silver spoons are traditionally referred to as communion or baptismal spoons, and sometimes as incense spoons. Their exact function remains a matter of debate, but they attest to the richness of liturgical furnishings and Christian goldsmithing in the Byzantine Empire.

Weighing 32 grams and measuring 19.5 cm in length including the ring, this piece is in remarkable condition and is a particularly rare example on the antique art market. This spoon comes from a former collection in western France.
