Roman Terracotta Oil Lamp Decorated With A Military Figure And A Lion, 2nd Century

A beautiful Roman oil lamp made of molded terracotta, oval in shape, featuring remarkable relief decoration on the disc. The scene depicts a standing figure, likely a soldier or a heroic figure, wearing a helmet and armor. He holds a long spear, while to his right stands a lion, accompanied by a large oval shield. A radiating decorative pattern completes the composition and highlights this scene of military or mythological inspiration, the interpretation of which remains open to interpretation. It could be a depiction of Mars, the god of war, or a victorious hero accompanied by a lion, a symbol of power and courage. The spout is decorated with fine radiating fluting. The base is ring-shaped, with no visible maker’s mark. The quality of the casting, the iconographic composition, and the technical characteristics allow this lamp to be attributed to a production from the Roman Empire, dating to the 2nd century, possibly the early 3rd century A.D.
