Pope Clement II relic - Tooth authenticated in sealed theca, 19th century

Rare and fascinating historical memento linked to the pontificate of Clement II (1005-1047), presented in the form of a "relic" preserved in an elegant theca from the second half of the 19th century. It should be pointed out that the use of the term "relic" here is for historical and collectors' purposes, as this pope was never beatified or canonized.

.

This theca, richly decorated with papal arms (tiara, crozier and patriarchal cross), contains on purple velvet an incisor tooth attributed to the pontiff. Beneath it is the authentic manuscript: Dentis Clementis Sec(undi) PM.

Remarkably, Clement II is one of the few popes not to have been buried in St. Peter's Basilica, but in Bamberg Cathedral in Germany. His tomb has been opened several times over the centuries, notably in the 19th century and for the last time in 1942, during analyses into the circumstances of his death (hypothesis of poisoning).

In all likelihood, this tooth would have been removed during one of these openings, probably by a high-ranking ecclesiastic, possibly Cardinal Anton-Hubert Fischer. In fact, the entire theca is sealed on the reverse with a red wax seal bearing the coat of arms of Cardinal Fischer, Archbishop of Cologne and Cardinal from 1903 under the pontificate of Leo XIII. This seal places the closing of the object between 1903 and 1912.

According to the research carried out, this could be the only known "relic" of this pope outside his tomb, and more widely one of the very few preserved papal teeth.

An object of great singularity, at the crossroads of religious history and collector's curiosity, intended for enlightened enthusiasts of the papacy and the history of the Vatican.
