An elegant and delicate small Flemish floral still life depicting a rich bouquet of flowers arranged in a wicker basket, set against a dark background.

The bouquet features several varieties of flowers, including tulips, roses, carnations, and others, skillfully arranged in a lush and refined composition. The botanical diversity, the meticulous rendering of the flowers, and the contrast between them and the dark background reflect the characteristic style of 17th-century Flemish floral still lifes.

This work can be linked to the output of Jan Brueghel the Younger’s followers and, more broadly, to the compositions of bouquets in baskets developed in the former Netherlands during the first half of the 17th century, particularly in the tradition of Balthasar van der Ast (1593–1675). The composition, with its dense bouquet presented in a wicker basket, is fully in keeping with this Flemish tradition of precious still life.

Painted around 1640, this work is a fine example of small Flemish cabinet painting from the Grand Siècle. Its particularly small size suggests that it may have been conceived as a decorative element intended for a collector’s cabinet, as these small panels are meant to be viewed up close and appreciated for the finesse of their execution.

The painting is executed on a thin, slightly convex oak panel. It is in good overall condition, with only a few small losses localized along the edge of the panel.
