Portrait Of Marie Ursule Hubertine De Raick, A Member Of The Liège Aristocracy, Late 18th Century
Portrait of Marie Ursule Hubertine de Raick, a member of the Liège aristocracy, late 18th century
An elegant portrait of a lady of the Liège aristocracy, depicting Marie Ursule Hubertine de Raick (1760–1834), painted wearing a white dress and styled according to late 18th-century fashion. Her coat of arms, painted on the left side of the composition, underscores her membership in the Liège nobility.
The canvas, stretched over an oak panel, is preserved in its original frame. On the reverse is a lengthy handwritten inscription that formally identifies the subject and provides valuable historical context for this work.
Born in Liège on November 2, 1760, Marie Ursule Hubertine de Raick was the daughter of Gilles Mathieu Louis de Raick, a lawyer in the city of Liège and alderman in 1789. On June 14, 1789, she married Godefroid Charles Herman de Groutars (1754–1815), chief clerk of the Noble Estate of the Liège region and the County of Looz, and also a municipal councilor in Ougrée.
This portrait thus offers an interesting glimpse into Liège’s aristocratic society on the eve of the French Revolution, both through the documented identity of the subject and the presence of her coat of arms and original inscription.
