17th-century Limoges Enamel Candlestick Holder, Attributed To Jacques II Laudin, Louis XIV
Rare enameled copper candlestick shaft, made in the Limoges workshops in the late 17th century or very early 18th century, during the reign of Louis XIV.
This remarkable fragment is attributed to master enameler Jacques II Laudin (1663–1729), a leading figure in the famous Limousin dynasty of enamelers.
The upper portion is adorned with two male heads in profile, executed in grisaille. The rest of the body features an elegant design of white foliage and plant motifs on a black background, accented with touches of gold—a hallmark of the refinement of Limousin enamelwork from this period.
This attribution finds particularly convincing parallels with several examples held in European museum collections. Notably, there is a very similar candlestick held at the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin (inv. K5067), bearing the signature “I.L.” attributed to Jacques II Laudin. A comparable pair, also attributed to the same master enameler, was offered at Sotheby’s during the September 25, 2024, auction (lot 135). Another similar example was sold at Auctions at Showplace in New York on July 14, 2019 (lot 18).
Despite the gaps in its enameled surface, which reveal the copper base, this fragment retains all the delicacy of its decoration and serves as an interesting example of Limousin enamel art during the reign of Louis XIV.
Height: 10.3 cm.
