A rare architectural sculpture carved from solid walnut, finely crafted by a folk artist.
This small, distinctive stele features remarkable decoration celebrating the French monarchy during the reign of Louis XIV.
It brings together the principal royal emblems: a shield bearing three fleurs-de-lis beneath a closed crown, a medallion of Louis XIV, King of France and Navarre, in right-side profile beneath a canopy, with flags unfurled on either side, and military trophies on base of composition.
The antique-style base bears a Latin inscription: “Ludovic Mag. Gloriae Patriae,” signed with the initials P.D.C.
Given its architectural design and commemorative nature, this sculpture may have served as a model for a stone sculpted stele, or more simply as an object of patriotic devotion celebrating the figure of Sun King.
An object of particular interest due to its period and the richness of its decoration, all concentrated within a small format: 19 x 11 x 4.5 cm.
