Large Gothic Offering Dish With Unicorns, Mid-15th Century - Medieval Gothic, Middle Ages
The center of the dish is adorned with a particularly original composition: a five-petaled flower, between whose petals are five lion heads, from whose mouths emerge an equal number of unicorns, arranged in a radiating pattern around the central motif. This iconography, which is particularly rare on this type of dish, lends the object a remarkable decorative and symbolic character.
A very similar model, featuring four unicorns instead of five, is reproduced in Tamás Egyeki-Szabó’s book,Beckenschlägerschüsseln 15th–16th Century, 2008, p. 72, allowing this work to be precisely linked to the production of large Germanic offertory dishes from Nuremberg in the late Middle Ages.
The example presented here is complete, with several deformations as well as old tin restorations, attesting to its use and long history. These signs of wear, preserved on the object, contribute to the authentic and lively character of this medieval piece.
A beautiful object from the Gothic period, particularly interesting due to the rarity of its unicorn decoration and the preservation of its original condition.
