Plate In Champlevé XIIth XIIIth.
Description:
Gilded copper, enamels.
This plaque represents the Angel Gabriel. He presents a relic. This has disappeared, all that remains is the bat which held the rock crystal cabochon in which the relic was enshrined.
A counter plate bore the champlevé, and was decorated with hard stone cabochons. These could even be reused antique intaglios as are often found on works of art such as medieval champlevé.
The plate, with its flat and rectangular shape, was probably captured on a book binding.
This could be the work of an English enamelling workshop.
Conditions:
Very good original condition, no accident or missing enamel.
