Statue In A Simulated Setting, 19th Century
Définition : porcelain painted.
This rare statue depicts a man in late 18th-century clothing. The work is remarkably rich in detail, including lace, embroidery, flowers on the bicorn hat and the lapels of the frock coat, the chatelaine, and the lorgnettes hanging from the waistcoat, among many other details.
The face and hands have a matte finish, unlike the rest of the figure, which is covered in a glossy fabric. The rarity of this object is further enhanced by its use; the statue represents a seated man and is designed to be placed anywhere, creating a trompe-l'œil effect of lifelike movement. In the house from which it came, the statue was displayed on the piano.
This was quite fitting for the man, as such men were known as "jolis cœurs" (handsome hearts), well-presented, dressed in a gallant manner, and serenading their admirers. They were often military men.
Objects with the same concept existed, such as monkeys climbing vines, suspended from curtain cords that simulated the vines. These statues were made of porcelain or earthenware. Our statue of a man, due to its unique rarity, may be a commissioned piece or (and) a representation of a real man. It is French work, with only incised numbers as markings. Condition: Very good for this type of object, with tiny chips to the flowers and an old repair under the right knee; these minor imperfections are invisible when in situ.
Dimensions:
Height (bust + head): 50 cm, total height: 80 cm, seat surface: 23 cm x 30 cm.
