A very beautiful romantic scene depicting a couple of elegantly dressed figures
This piece was created by the famous German manufacturer Rudolf Kämmer (located in Rudolstadt-Volkstedt, Thuringia).
This sculptor carried on the noble tradition of Thuringian porcelain craftsmanship by remaining faithful to techniques passed down over the centuries to produce some of the finest porcelain of the early 20th century, such as the piece we are pleased to offer here.
Our set of hand-painted polychrome porcelain pieces is marked on the base with the monogram “LK” (the letters joined together) surmounted by a crown, indicating that it was produced in the early 20th century.
The scene: A young man appears to be using all his charms to seduce a beautiful young woman; his posture seems to convey his eagerness, and the position of his arms—which perhaps seek to embrace her too quickly—betrays his desire for a first physical encounter.
The young woman, for her part, seems to be urging him to “exercise restraint”; she appears to find this handsome young man a bit too forward. From her raised hand and her posture—as evidenced by the turn of her torso, which suggests evasion—she seems to be firmly rejecting his advances.
She would certainly prefer to be courted for much longer; she would appreciate taking the time to awaken to desire through thoughtful gestures, romance, tender words, and compliments before committing to a bit more intimacy.
Both are seated on a bench and dressed in 18th-century clothing; Our young characters seem to have found the romance of music as a pretext for drawing closer; the young woman holds a lute resting on her lap, while the young man has placed his flute at their feet in a basket of flowers.
