Bronze with a honey-brown patina.
This writing desk consists of a triangular base supported by three stylized lions. The base has a rim adorned with an egg-and-dart frieze and moldings, and supports a thick, round plinth decorated with an interlaced frieze and vegetal and geometric motifs. In the center of the writing trays, a kneeling satyr holds the candle holder.
The bronze has acquired a honey-brown patina typical of the period. Originally, one would find elsewhere representations of a crouching satyr carrying a torch, a votive statuette of an emperor, etc. The statue of the kneeling satyr is here reinterpreted as a candle holder, drawing inspiration from purely sculptural models. The Louvre possesses a similar example. Our writing desk was probably made by Severo da Ravenna around 1480-1520.
