18th Century Christ At The Column In Bronze After François Duquesnoy
Artist: Duquesnoy
18th Century. A very fine Christ at the Column after a model by François Duquesnoy, made around 1620. Based on the famous model known as the Bound Christ, which is in ivory. The sculpture depicts Christ with downcast eyes and his elegantly bent body in a precarious yet balanced pose. This sculpture is an early example of Duquesnoy's aesthetic vision, his maniera greca. Similar to Duquesnoy's Saint Andrew and his Laocoön-like torso, Christ is represented here in a manner reminiscent of ancient Greek sculpture. The proportionate, slender, and toned body of the Bound Christ is a fundamental aspect of Duquesnoy's own vision of the exquisite sculpture of the ancient Roman and Greek Empires. This example is in bronze with a nuanced golden patina, sand cast, and features remarkable chasing. Height 21.7 cm. Base 6 x 7 cm.
