Bas Relief Sainte Famille Alabaster From Mechelen 17th Century
Beautiful alabaster devotional panel depicting the Holy Family accompanied by Mary Magdalene.
Mary Magdalene in the foreground holding the ointment jar towards the infant Jesus prefigures the Passion. The Virgin Mary supports the infant Jesus, who makes a gesture of blessing. Saint Joseph closes the composition in the background. In the upper left, a dove holding a branch in its beak rises from the clouds. On the right, a drapery.
This alabaster bas-relief (1600-1620) from Mechelen shows a strong Italian influence. The treatment of the faces, the hair and the gracefulness of the hands with their elongated fingers are all markers of this southern influence.
Molded and carved oak frame.
Very good condition, a few wear and tear restorations that in no way alter the legibility of the scene.
Plate size: 12.5cm X 9.5cm
With frame: 23.5cm X 19.5cm
