Large Medieval Seal In Red Wax Of Charles d'Orléans, Count Of Angoulême (15th Century)

Large medieval red wax seal of Charles d'Orléans, Count of Angoulême (15th century)

Rare and important medieval red wax seal attributed to Charles d'Orléans, Count of Angoulême (1459-1496), father of King François I, from his union with Louise of Savoy.

This large personal seal, preserved on its original vellum tail, features the quartered arms of Orléans and Visconti-Milan, confirming its attribution to Charles d'Angoulême. Contrary to an earlier handwritten note identifying it as that of Jean, Comte d'Angoulême (his father), this seal is clearly distinguishable: Jean's seal in fact bears only the arms of Orléans, while this one adopts the quartered coat of arms characteristic of his son.

These arms were notably depicted on stained glass windows in the Orléans chapel of the Célestins convent church (no longer extant, but known from early drawings), reinforcing the heraldic coherence of this piece.

The seal features an armorial shield surmounted by a toad-headed helmet, itself stamped with a fleur-de-lys crest. The reverse features a counter-seal with the same coat of arms.

Note: the seal was formerly folded while the wax was still malleable, resulting in a crease with a partially obscured right side. This is a fragmentary specimen, but retains good legibility and historical interest.

Dimensions:
- Seal height: 6.8 cm
- Total width with vellum tail: 9.4 cm

Object of fine provenance, steeped in history, testifying to the prestige of the House of Orléans-Angoulême on the eve of the Renaissance.
