"Medieval Armorial Seal "
Medieval armorial seal (15th–16th century) Large medieval armorial seal in brown wax – Savoy / Dauphiné – Late 15th / early 16th century Diameter: 5.5 cm | Thickness: 1.5 cm | Original Wax Seal: Superb and rare brown wax seal, probably a seigneurial seal, dating from the late 15th to early 16th century. The impression depicts a quartered shield (four quarters, alternating solid and hatched fields) surrounded by two heraldic animals (beasts with open mouths, probably stylized lions or leopards), characteristic of Savoyard and Dauphiné heraldry of the period. Around the coat of arms, a partially legible circular Gothic legend includes the sequence of letters: "...VILEGRLE...", possibly an early form of the name Villegrillet / Villegrille / Vilegrille, a minor regional nobility attested in the 15th and 16th centuries. Condition: • Antique wax perfectly consistent with the period. • Well-preserved relief, legible coat of arms. • Minor wear consistent with age, normal for a 500-year-old piece. • Isolated piece, without parchment. Historical Significance: Large seigneurial seal, typical of the Feudal documents from the late Middle Ages in Savoy/Burgundy/Dauphiné. A very fine example of noble sealing practices. Provenance: Private collection. Exact origin undetermined.
