Wooden Atlas, Late 17th–early 18th Century

Italian Stipo Atlante, Late 17th / Early 18th Century

A rare carved wooden Atlante figure from an Italian stipo (cabinet) dating from the late 17th or early 18th century. This sculpture served as a support for the cabinet’s hinged top when it was open, a feature characteristic of prestigious Italian cabinets.

The male figure, nude and powerfully muscular, is depicted in a tense pose, with his head thrown back and his arm raised toward his face, expressing the effort required to support the top. The hollowed-out reverse side attests to its original attachment inside the cabinet.

A very beautiful Baroque sculpture with a deep mahogany-brown patina, displaying fine craftsmanship and harmonious age-related wear.
