Salt Mill At The Fox
Salt mill, Auvergne region, fox motif. Several interpretations are possible regarding the fox on salt mills: as fine as a fox regarding the salt which had to come out of the mill as fine as possible and Faux saunier goupil - gabelan Ysengrin: to be as cunning as a fox to avoid the gabelle (old salt tax). This small mill, diameter 27 height 27, is a fine example of folk art probably from the 17th century although it is difficult to date it precisely!
