Egyptian Blue Frit Amulet Representing Ptah-pateque - Late Period, 600-300 Bc
Rare Egyptian blue siliceous frit amulet depicting the protector god Ptah-Pateque, also called Patèque or Pataikos in Greek tradition. Of Phoenician origin, this secondary deity of the Egyptian pantheon possessed an apotropaic function: it was intended to ward off evil, malefic forces and chaos.
.Initially depicted on the bows of Phoenician ships as a protective genie, Ptah-Pateque was quickly adopted by the Egyptians. He often appears as an amulet worn as a protective talisman, or placed on mummies to ensure the deceased's protection in the afterlife. It is frequently associated with the god Bes.
The deity is depicted in the characteristic guise of a naked dwarf with a bald head, prominent belly and deliberately misshapen proportions. This symbolic iconography reinforced his protective power.
The amulet is preserved in generally good condition. We note a small lack of enamel at the top of the head, now covered with ancient concretions, testifying to its age and authenticity.
The amulet is preserved in good overall condition.
