Hammered bronze cup from the Sassanid period, 3rd–7th centuries – Former Parisian collection

Rare bronze cup from the Sassanid period, dating from the 3rd–7th centuries CE. This piece attests to the remarkable technical mastery of the artisans of the Sassanid Empire, who fashioned these vessels from a small bronze ingot, hammered entirely by hand to gradually achieve their final shape.

The surface of the cup clearly retains the numerous hammer marks left by the artisan’s tool—true imprints of ancient craftsmanship and the laborious process of shaping the metal. The simplicity of the form is here enhanced by the quality of the craftsmanship and by the deep green patina that completely covers the object, attesting to its age and its prolonged time spent underground, likely originating from an ancient excavation site.

The Sassanid Empire (224–651 CE), which spanned much of present-day Iran, Mesopotamia, and Central Asia, was one of the great civilizations of Late Antiquity. As heirs to ancient Persian traditions, the Sassanids developed highly refined craftsmanship, particularly in the working of bronze, silver, and precious metals. These everyday objects bear witness to the technical and artistic richness of this civilization, which rivaled Rome and later Byzantium for several centuries.

The cup comes from a former Parisian collection.
