Medieval Pewter Dinner Plate — Bruges, 14th–15th Century — Archaeology, Shop Sign

A rare miniature pewter dinner plate, dating from the 14th–15th centuries, originally from Flanders and preserved in a former French collection.

Very small in size, this plate features a particularly interesting design. The center is adorned with a geometric motif consisting of a seven-pointed star inscribed within a circle. The rim is also decorated with an elegant geometric pattern composed of alternating triangles, embellished with striations or groups of three dots.

These small pieces are the work of binblotiers, artisans specializing in the manufacture of small pewter objects. Their output included, in particular, miniature objects, accessories, and various devotional or pilgrimage items, among which were the famous pilgrimage badges.

This is a teaset of Flemish origin, most likely from the Bruges region.

Medieval pewter tea sets are particularly rare today. Intended to be handled and used by children, they have naturally sustained significant damage over the centuries. The material, which is easily remelted, has also led to the loss of a large portion of these small objects. Exemplars that have retained their decoration and structural integrity are therefore particularly sought after.

The plate is complete, though it has some distortions and a small hole in the metal. These age-related imperfections in no way hinder the appreciation or interpretation of the decoration, which remains perfectly visible.

A rare and charming piece, attesting both to the work of pewter artisans in the former Netherlands and to the existence of small objects intended for children in the late Middle Ages.
