Roman Terracotta Oil Lamp With Erotic Decoration – Antiquity

A Roman terracotta oil lamp, its upper medallion featuring a finely molded erotic scene, typical of certain ancient objects intended for both domestic use and symbolic or votive purposes. The composition depicts a couple in an intimate pose, rendered in low relief, framed by a circular border. The well-defined spout retains its oil inlet, while the filling hole is visible in the center of the decoration. It has a beautiful archaeological patina, with traces of burial and use attesting to its authenticity. This type of lamp, widespread throughout the Roman Empire, is generally dated between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. The relatively common erotic decorations reflect the customs and popular iconography of the Roman period.
