Roman bronze brooch with enamel in the shape of a seahorse.
1st–3rd century.
Copper alloy with a green patina.
Red and white enamel (some cracking).
Approximately 65 x 37 x 18 mm.
As quintessential marine symbols, seahorses represented strength and speed to the Romans and were associated with Neptune, the god of the seas. In fact, they were the ones who pulled his chariot.
Rare, especially since the enamel is almost entirely intact and the pin is preserved.
