"Coptic Textile (tabula) - Egypt, Byzantine Period, 4th-7th Century Ad"
Coptic textile (tabula) - Egypt, Byzantine period, 4th-7th century AD. A beautiful and rare depiction of a warrior with a shield. He appears nude, except for a cloak draped over his shoulders. The textile is presented under glass in a gilt wood and stucco frame. Acquired through the estate of an antique dealer from the Rhône region; unfortunately, the exact provenance of this piece has been lost. There are a few small chips to the stucco. A similar example is held in the collections of the Byzantine Library at the Collège de France (see link below): https://salamandre.college-de-france.fr/archives-en-ligne/ead.html?id=FR075CDF_00BYZ-FP&c=FR075CDF_00BYZ-FP_de-29. Frame dimensions: 36.5cm x 33.5cm. Textile dimensions: approximately 22cm x 19cm. Weight: 1130g
