Fragment Of A Sarcorphage - Roman Marble - 1st-2nd Century
Sarcophagus fragment - Roman marble - I-II century
Sarcophagus fragment in carved marble, decorated with a garland of fruit in relief (apples or wedges, with stylized plant elements such as leaves).
The composition features deeply recessed, rounded volumes characteristic of Roman funerary ornaments.
In Imperial Rome, the sarcophagus spread from the 2nd century onwards as a mode of burial, alongside and then gradually replacing cremation. These stone chests, often decorated with reliefs, helped to dramatize the status of the deceased and express beliefs linked to the afterlife. The motifs of garlands of fruit and plant elements refer to themes of abundance, cycle and regeneration, frequently associated with the funerary context.
