Roman Marble Head Of A Woman - 1st Century Ad
Marble Head of a Woman – Roman Art, 1st–2nd Century AD
This female head, sculpted in finely crystalline white marble, depicts an idealized face with a serene expression. The features are harmonious: the almond-shaped eyes, with their sharp outlines, are slightly incised to suggest the pupils; the nose is straight; the mouth is small and well-defined, with full, closed lips.
The carefully styled hair is gathered in broad, symmetrical waves above the forehead and pulled back into a low chignon. This balanced and controlled treatment of the hair is in keeping with the classical tradition of Roman female portraits from the Imperial period, inspired by Greek models of the 4th century BC
Provenance: Jürgen Haering Galerie am Museum.
A certificate of authenticity dated 2008 from the gallery will be provided to the buyer.
