Medieval Seal Of The Officiality Of Strasbourg, 15th Century, In Its Original Medieval Case
Rare medieval red wax seal of the Officiality of Strasbourg (Curie Argentinensis), preserved in its exceptional original wooden case.
The seal depicts a bishop’s hand holding a crosier, accompanied by a crescent moon and a star. The design is surrounded by the inscription “CVRIE ARGENTIN(SIS),” referring to the Officiality of Strasbourg.
The seal is housed in a circular box made of linden wood, fitted with a beechwood band. A parchment tail runs through the assembly, indicating how it was suspended from the documents to which it was attached.
A rare and particularly well-documented historical artifact.
Identical seals were published by Maxime Messner of the University of Strasbourg in his study Toward an Archaeological Approach to Medieval and Modern Seals (14th–17th Centuries). The author notes that this is the seal most frequently found on documents relating to the Commandery of Saint John in Strasbourg.
The specimens cataloged under call numbers H1388/6 and H1338/8 are still attached to their original documents and are precisely dated to 1476 and 1478. These comparisons allow us to date this specimen to around the third quarter of the 15th century.
The significance of this piece lies as much in its sigillographic value as in its remarkable state of preservation, as the seal has retained its original wooden case. It is a collection that offers a particularly vivid glimpse into administrative and documentary practices of the late Middle Ages.
