Attic Kylix With The Engraved Greek Inscription φιλωνος, 5th–4th Century B.c. Archaeology
A very rare drinking cup of the kylix type, characteristic of Attic production from the 5th and 4th centuries BCE, traditionally used at banquets in the ancient Greek world.
The cup features a flared body with two rounded handles, resting on a very short foot. Its decoration is distinguished by an alternation of orange clay and black glaze, highlighting its beautiful aesthetic appeal. A slight curve marks the transition below the neck, accented by a fine red border.
The exceptional significance of this piece lies in its Greek inscription engraved on the body, whose letters, written in capital letters, remain perfectly legible. The name ΦΙΛΩΝΟΣ (Philōnos) can be made out, the genitive form of the Greek name Φίλων (Philôn), meaning “of Philon.” This inscription can thus be understood as a mark of ownership: “[This cup belongs] to Philon.”
The last letter displays a unique form, differing from the usual shape of the sigma. This peculiarity could indicate a regional graphic variant or a less common epigraphic form, though it is impossible to determine this definitively without an in-depth comparative study.
With its personal inscription, this cup offers particularly interesting insight into banquet customs and the practice of marking personal objects in ancient Greece. Kylikes bearing inscriptions of ownership are highly sought-after pieces, and this example is particularly rare on the market.
