Italian Majolica Bowl With Sgraffito Decoration – Ferrara, Emilia-romagna, Late 15th–early 16th Century
A rare Italian majolica bowl with sgraffito decoration, made in the Ferrara region of Emilia-Romagna around the late 15th or early 16th century.
This piece features a polychrome decoration dominated by shades of brown and green on a beige background. The center is adorned with the profile of a young woman turned toward the left, wearing a headband and a dress with a deeply plunging neckline, in keeping with the aesthetic ideals of the Italian Renaissance.
The decoration, executed using the sgraffito technique, is created by incising the surface before glazing, thereby revealing the motifs engraved into the clay. This method, characteristic of workshops in Emilia-Romagna, lends the work great graphic finesse.
The bowl comes from a former Burgundian collection. It consists of two fragments that were joined together in the past and retains two period restorations, bearing witness to its history and use over the centuries.
Dimensions: height: 6.3 cm; diameter: 13.3 cm
A beautiful and rare example of Italian Renaissance ceramics, from the workshops of the Ferrara region.
