18th-century “capucine-style” Plate Key – From The Collection Of Adrien Prévost De Longpérier, 19th Century

Exceptional early 18th-century wrought-iron key with a “capucine-style” plate – From the collection of Adrien Prévost de Longpérier (1816–1882)

A rare wrought-iron key with a “capucine”-style plate, dating from the early 18th century, circa 1710–1720. A particularly sought-after design, this elegant key attests to the refinement achieved by artistic locksmithing in the modern era, when utilitarian objects also became expressions of creativity and technical virtuosity.

Its balanced silhouette, finely crafted plate, and harmonious proportions make it a piece of exceptional quality, representative of the meticulous craftsmanship of 18th-century locksmith workshops.

This key has an exceptional provenance: it comes from the collection of Adrien Prévost de Longpérier (1816–1882), one of the great French scholars of the 19th century. An archaeologist, numismatist, and curator at the Louvre Museum, as well as a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, Longpérier played an essential role in the development of archaeological studies and the establishment of France’s public collections. His own collection, comprising a wide variety of objects, reflects his scholarly perspective and his discerning taste for ancient works.

A rare collector’s item, combining historical interest, high-quality craftsmanship, and remarkable provenance.
