Carved Coconut Dated 1775 - Signed Folk Art, Sailor Or Convict Work

Sculpted coconut dated 1775 - signed folk art, sailor or convict work

Rare 18th-century carved coconut, precisely dated May 8, 1775 (Mayo 8 de 1775), accompanied by its original base also in coconut.

This object belongs to folk art, often associated with the productions of sailors or convicts, but stands out here for its exceptional age and the quality of its workmanship. The majority of carved coconuts on the market are generally dated to the first half of the 19th century; a precisely dated example from the 18th century is therefore particularly rare.

The object is signed by the artist.

The object is signed by its maker, probably named José A. Ochoa, whose surname suggests Hispanic, possibly Basque, origins. All the inscriptions are in Spanish and indicate a personal dedication:

"Dedicada a mi amiga Elena E. de Hahn. Su amigo José A. Ochoa, Mayo 8 de 1775"

The nut is entirely carved with delicate floral motifs, testifying to true craftsmanship. It rests on its original coconut base, also worked.

Beautiful folk art object from the last third of the 18th century, both decorative and historical.
