19th-century Cartel Clock - Horace Vernet - "canrobert, Marshal Of France" - Versailles Palace

Cartel XIXe - Horace Vernet - "Canrobert, Maréchal de France" - Provenance Château Versailles

Rare and authentic museum cartel dating from the 19th century, from the original frame of the painting "Canrobert, Maréchal de France" painted by Horace Vernet.

A major artist of 19th-century French painting, Horace Vernet (1789-1863) excelled particularly in military and historical scenes, highly prized under the Second Empire. A favorite for official commissions, he was notably called upon to glorify France's great military figures.

The painting concerned, now preserved at the Château de Versailles (inventory MV1999), depicts Marshal of France François Certain de Canrobert (1809-1895) in military garb. It was commissioned by Napoleon III for the 1857 Salon, as part of his plan to reconstitute, in the image of Napoleon I, a gallery dedicated to his marshals.

.

This cartel, made of gilded wood with black-painted inscription, was attached to the painting's original frame when it was presented at the 1857 Salon. A direct testimony to the museography of the Second Empire, it constitutes a rare, rarely preserved heritage item.

The cartel was removed at the time of the exhibition.

Removed during an earlier restoration and replaced by a more recent cartel, this example was found in the workshop of an art restorer in Oise.

Dimensions: 29.5 cm long x 4.5 cm high.
Condition: wear consistent with its age and use.

An exceptional piece for collectors of objects related to art history, museography or the Second Empire. The opportunity to treat yourself to a little piece of Versailles at home!
