Medieval Closoir Painted With Fleur-de-lis Coat Of Arms - Southern France, 14th-15th Century
Rare medieval painted wood closoir (softwood) from the South of France (14th-15th century).
Closoirs were panels designed to be placed between the beams of medieval ceilings. Often adorned with painted decorations, they contributed to the visual richness of civil and religious interiors. While many examples are known from Italy, Spain and the South of France, this type of decoration is also found further north, as demonstrated by the remarkable ensembles preserved at the Musée de la Cour d'Or in Metz.
The present panel is decorated with a heraldic motif consisting of a red fleur-de-lys (gules) on a yellow background (gold). This blazoning stands out against a dark green background enriched with a floral decoration done in stencil, a technique frequently used in medieval painted decor.
By the quality of its preserved polychromy and its decorative character, this closoir is a precious testimony to interior ornamentation in the Middle Ages.
