Medieval Bronze Seal Matrix – Phoenix And Her Young – France, 14th Century – Appraised

Medieval bronze seal matrix – Phoenix and its young – France, 14th century – Appraised

Rare bronze seal matrix, dating from the 14th century and of French origin, featuring particularly refined iconography.

The central motif depicts a phoenix feeding its young. In medieval imagery, the phoenix is a major symbol of resurrection and spiritual renewal. A mythical bird rising from its ashes, it embodies Christ in Christian symbolism, but also the victory of life over death and the continuity of the divine cycle. The scene, even rarer, of the phoenix feeding its offspring reinforces this idea of transmission, protection, and regeneration. It can also be interpreted as an allegory of family piety and the nobility of virtues.

Surrounding this composition is a circular inscription bearing the owner’s name. To this day, it remains partially indecipherable, adding further historical and sigillographic interest to the object.

This die has been appraised by Christophe Varosi and comes from the former Jean Dunin collection, guaranteeing its provenance and scientific value.

Dimensions: diameter 2 cm; height 2.9 cm.

A well-preserved object, both a testament to medieval seal art and a bearer of powerful symbolic iconography, sought after by collectors of archaeology and medieval history.
