Pair of Roaring Lions, Carved Wood – Italian Workshops, Second Half of the 16th Century

A rare and remarkable pair of roaring lions carved from wood, created in Italian workshops during the second half of the 16th century.

These two matching sculptures display all the expressive vigor characteristic of Italian Mannerist sculpture from this period. One lion is depicted standing, the other sitting, each adopting a different pose that brings the pair to life with great sculptural force.

The rendering of the manes—abundant and deeply dynamic—as well as the energetic modeling of the bodies, are characteristic of 16th-century Italian works. Their particularly lively “disheveled” style lends these animals a striking presence.

The sculptures retain an old light gray lacquer, verging on ivory white. This finish could be the result of a past restoration, or it may even be their original finish, though it is impossible to say for certain.

The set shows several signs of wear and loss of polychromy, a few small areas where the wood is exposed, as well as old repairs, all of which bear witness to their long history. These restorations in no way detract from the sculptural quality or the exceptional character of this pair.

Dimensions: The taller lion is 13.5 cm high and 15 cm long. The second lion is of comparable dimensions, though slightly smaller.

A rare pair of decorative sculptures from the Italian Renaissance, of exceptional craftsmanship and particularly powerful expression.
