Medieval Bronze Spoon Known As An “apostle Spoon” – Flanders, Late 15th Century – Virgin And Child
Medieval bronze spoon known as the “apostle spoon,” typical of Flemish production from the late 15th century.
The top of the handle, which has a triangular cross-section, is adorned with a religious figure, in this case a Virgin and Child. Both the handle and the figure are cast, while the bowl was hammered to form the hollow.
These spoons remain somewhat enigmatic regarding their exact function. They are sometimes interpreted as incense spoons, baptismal spoons, or even as utensils for culinary use.
The object is in good overall condition, despite a visible crack at the base of the bowl.
Dimensions: 13.2 cm in height.
