Rare Imari Porcelain Koro - Edo Period, Bakumatsu Period C.1860 - Nanban Subject

Artist: Zoshuntei Sanpo,arita
Magnificent Arita/Imari porcelain incense burner (Koro) from the late Edo period, Bakumatsu period (circa 1860). This rare piece illustrates Japan's opening to the Western world, with its famous "Nanban" (Southern Barbarians) decoration. The object depicts a European ship and Dutch characters with exceptional finesse of line. The quality of the enamels and gilding is simply breathtaking. Of particular note are the elephant-head handles with their mobile rings, and a Shishi lion fretel, all in a remarkable state of preservation. Under a magnifying glass, we can make out fine internal cracks in the enamel, proof of its authenticity, without any impact on the structure. The reverse bears the "Fuku" (Happiness) mark, hand-drawn in the style of the "Zoshuntei Sanpo Zo" workshop. This mark is linked to Hisatomi Yojibei I, who in 1841 obtained the exclusive privilege of exporting Arita porcelain. In contrast to later copies, this piece shows irregularities in the hand-finishing that testify to the craftsmanship of the artist.Dimensions: Height 15.5 cm. Weight 613 g.Please examine the enclosed photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. Please note that shipping costs include labor, packaging and postage.
