An outstanding Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre bowl, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones, circa 1915. These brilliant Wedgwood lustres came triumphantly to life, and the initial pattern number of the “First Ten Lustre Decorations”, Z4823, saw the light of day in October 1914, appropriately enough almost exactly nine months after Daisy full establishment as a staff designer! Z4823 belongs to the formative group of Fairyland Lustre designs that sought to bring imaginative, jewel-toned decoration to an era overshadowed by the First World War. Its exterior is Dark Green Lustre, mottled with dark all-color stainings, the combination yielding an exceptional depth of tone with a violet undertone in angled light. This piece unites precision of execution, richness of palette and thematic storytelling — all hallmarks of Makeig-Jones’s finest period. A documented Decoration-Book pattern from the first ten lustre decorations and a sought-after addition to a serious Wedgwood collection. Size: height 5.8 cm; diameter 10.6 cm. Condition: excellent; white under-glaze areas inside (see photos) are part of the original making. Lustre colors have far greater vibrancy in hand than any photograph can show.
