Regency Spode Chinoiserie Spill Vase With Mandarin Ducks, C. 1820–1825
A beautifully proportioned English bone china spill vase produced by Spode during the Regency period, circa 1820–1825. The elegant trumpet form and richly painted chinoiserie decoration reflect the refined decorative taste of early 19th-century English interiors.
Originally intended for the mantelpiece, spill vases were used to hold rolled paper spills for lighting candles and fireplaces. Their graceful forms and vivid decoration made them highly fashionable decorative objects during the Regency era.
This example is decorated in Spode pattern no. 2975 with colourful mandarin ducks among lotus flowers and green lily pads. The palette combines emerald green, iron red, yellow and cobalt blue with delicate gilding. Raised pearl-beaded borders and the pink geometric ground add further refinement to the design.
The underside bears the hand-painted pattern number 2975 in brownish-gilt enamel. The absence of a printed Spode mark is entirely typical for smaller ornamental wares of this period.
An elegant Regency porcelain piece with excellent cabinet and interior appeal.
